CarShield Statement

For nearly 20 years, people have relied on CarShield to keep moving when their car breaks down, and that’s a responsibility our 1,500 employees take very seriously. Critical to the process is trust and transparency, which is why we strive to be crystal clear in everything we do.

While we disagree with many of the assertions from the FTC, we share their commitment to helping customers fully understand exactly what we provide and the value we offer. That’s why we were glad to work alongside the agency to answer their questions and carefully examine ways to improve our communications with customers. This only strengthens our already valuable product.

Our marketing efforts now include additional details about the elements of car repair typically covered and direct potential customers to our website, where full plans are easily viewed prior to making a purchase decision. We have significantly expanded our Shield Repair Network by adding more than 10,000 preferred car repair shops, and added a concierge system to help customers quickly locate a repair facility convenient for them. We have expanded rental car coverage, provided rideshare benefits for customers, and improved our rental car process to allow for earlier coverage. Finally, we are making very clear that all spokespeople in our ads are actual CarShield customers.

These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to most effectively serve our customers and help them keep moving.

“For better or worse, it seems the memories of some of the hardships of the lost COVID years are fading from memory. Though we welcomed the FTC's insights, it was unfortunate the FTC brought its gaze on our industry during the most tumultuous business climate in United States history -- exactly 2019-2022, the height of the pandemic. It is common knowledge that the pressures on the automotive industry were magnified monumentally during that time.

As General Counsel for a company that makes customer satisfaction and peace of mind its top priority, it was a time of extreme stress and intense pressure. CarShield was forced to go remote with 1000s of employees in a matter of 10 days, and our administrator American AutoShield suffered from the same pinch that slowed the whole automotive industry to a near halt. Suddenly the entire nation knew what a "supply chain" was because it seemed everyone you knew was waiting on something. Rental car agencies were out of cars, transmission and engine vendors had no parts to give, and don't forget the dreaded China chip shortage. The already stressed mechanic labor pool with an average age of 50+ shrank dramatically, and there was such an onslaught of auto repair needs that repair facilities were forced to prioritize their clientele based on repairs with the greatest returns and parts availability. It was a very tough time, yet unlike many businesses that are no longer with us here in the United States, CarShield is here stronger and more reliable than ever. At a time when other breakdown providers were leaving their customers high and dry, CarShield was learning from the hardships that hit the industry, streamlining its processes, and finding new and expanded ways to meet the changing needs of its customers.

While we are certain that the anomalies that led the FTC to examine our company were brought about by the unfortunate circumstances that hit our industry during the pandemic, CarShield is meeting this new challenge with the same open mind and positive attitude we implemented at that time and is excited by the changes this interaction has brought about.
